In the last ten years a new modelling approach to simulate public transport networks, called schedule-based, has been developed and applied. It allows us to overcome approximations carried out by using the traditionally frequency-based approach, based on the concept of hyperpath or optimal strategies, when transit systems with service characteristics different from the high frequency, low punctuality and low user information ones, have to be studied.

This book reports a theoretically consistent and coherent treatment of the schedule-based approach. It is the results of ten years' research carried out by the authors in this field, including teaching material of advanced courses, published papers and proceedings of international conferences.

Agostino Nuzzolo is full professor in Transportation Planning at "Tor Vergata" University of Rome, Italy; he is the head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Francesco Russo is full professor in Transportation Planning at "Mediterranea" University of Reggio Calabria, Italy; he is the head of the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics and Transportation.

Umberto Crisalli is researcher in Transportation Planning at "Tor Vergata" University of Rome, Italy.
