This paper is meant to prove that marxian economic value and Saussure linguistic value are two different aspects of a shared methodology whose origins go back to political economy first and then to linguistics. In such a methodology the concept of value is the underlying structure of any material linguistic act as well as of any real economic transaction. This makes it possibile to understand Marx’ references to language as a social product analogous to goods, as well as the examples Saussure took from political economy to explain how the signs work. Other results coming out from this analysis are: the crossing of the marxian alienation theory and the critical dimension which lies underneath Saussure’ semiology, and the need of going beyond the neutral character of structuralist methodology, to recover and maintain the ethical aspects implied in the subject/object relationship.
