This work analyses empirically the changed approach through which districts face the competition in the new global context. Particularly, whilst in the past the productive excellence was the pillar of the success of these districts as organizational form, it seems more and more evident that in modern districts the "service" element accompanies - sometimes overtaking it in value - the product element. The empirical analysis has been developed referring to the flower district of the Ponente Ligure, a context able to highlight the growing criticality of services, particularly those related to logistics, and the huge difficulties district companies meet in facing the required change. This district, in fact, has seen its market share shrinking and, at the same time, it lost the leadership it had previously achieved thanks to its unique production skills. Whilst the qualitative level of the production seems to be still high (the Ligurian product is amongst the best ones in the world), the district companies are facing a strong decline in demand due to the difficulties they face in the logistic and commercial area. The collected data support the hypothesis that the competitiveness of the districts, and sometimes their survival, depends on a more careful planning of elements such as marketing, logistics, commercialization and, more generally, of the service component. This planning cannot be carried on by a single player but it has to be the result of the joint and harmonic effort of district firms and institutions.
