Local Development in the Global Market: Some Unfashionable Reflections - The primary aim of the lecture is a new definition of world interchange with the stress on a core of flows of "specialities", i.e. goods generally acknowledged to meet certain sets of needs, produced selectively by certain groups of manufacturers localised in particular places, demand for which expands in certain conditions such as sustained growth in the per capita Gdp without egalitarian redistribution or any revolutionary innovations in life-style. The places where this production is carried out are called "local reproductive systems". The relative stability shown by development in Italy is taken to derive from the fact that duality with certain branches of the core obtains for many of Italy’s local reproductive systems. The paper then goes on to examine mechanisms "typical" of the social-economic deve - lopment of the local reproductive system, such as organisation of a production phase in separate sub-phases, to conclude that local reproductive development: a) cannot be captured with economic analysis alone; b) that it implies a parallel "civilising" process; c) that the very existence of local reproductive systems means that they will naturally take on the role of spreading development and industriali - sation. The lecture concludes with the hope that the focus in Italy’s social-econo - mic development will shift from raising per capita Gdp to the formation and deve - lopment of numerous local reproductive systems.
