The article discusses the crucial (but nonetheless neglected) aspect of organization of historic memory, i.e. commemoration of the initial phases of historic events and processes. These initial phases are characterized by contingency and liminality, and occupy a very special place in the commemoration of events. In this article, the topic is explored through an analysis of speeches and commemorations of the initial phases of the Resistance given by former President of Italy Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. After examining the form that history takes through these commemorations, the article discusses how these initial events are characterized, and the process through which the leading figures of these events are constructed using a commemorative approach.
