Ansia e dolore postoperatorio: il paziente ha soltanto bisogno di analgesici? - The present contribution aims at examining the relationship between anxiety and postoperative pain in patients undergoing surgery and analyzing the studies on preoperative teaching as a cognitive approach focused on managing the emotional dimension of pain. Most studies document a positive correlation between anxiety levels and pain intensity, when measured by validated scales. The results show that anxiety levels may well predictors of postoperative pain. To prevent the increase of postoperative pain it is necessary to identify patients with high anxiety levels and plan non-pharmacological strategies to reduce anxiety, in pre and postoperative phases associated with analgesic and anxiolytics. The authors stress that preoperative teaching reduce anxiety, distress, pain, improve compliance and patients satisfaction. Nevertheless its multiple effects, systematic research on its efficacy is yet very scarce and thus requires further investigations.
