With the crisis of conscience brought on by the outbreak of World War I, intellectuals were forced to come to terms with new realities, starting with the concept of a "just war". This realization forced them to look to their own national memory, to find unifying elements towards which the behaviour of the masses could be directed. One such element in this process of taking responsibility was the myth of the brotherhood of Latin nations, in the sense primarily of an Italo-French cultural understanding. Milan was the focus of this renewed encounter between cultures, the purpose of which was to recover a national identity that could relate to its own history. Biographical details Monica Caiazzo holds a PhD in the history of institutions and society in contemporary Europe.
