The large-scale operations in land redevelopment, culminating in the 1950s and 1960s, played a major part in changing the social and productive pattern of agriculture in the South of Italy, the Mezzogiorno. The successes achieved are largely to be attributed to the competence and endeavour of an experienced team of technicians. The late Giulio Leone can by rights be seen as the last representative of this team. As from the 1940s, his professional endeavour focused on the large landed estates of Sicily and various agricultural areas in Campania. The conclusion of his work on agrarian reform in Calabria was followed by prolonged service in the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno (the development fund for Southern Italy), first in administration of the redevelopment service and ,subsequently, as assistant director general of the institute itself. Thus we have an exemplary case of a long human and professional life earning him a place among the great "technicians" of modern-day policy for Southern Italy.
