The problem of payment of missed sessions on the part of the patient in psychotherapy is discussed, also with clinical examples. Both theoretical and clinical aspects are analyzed, also from the point of view of the history of psychoanalysis. The psychotherapeutic contract has important implications, both consciously and unconsciously, and for both patient and therapist. It is argued that in psychotherapy what is important is not whether the contract is or is not followed, because this would be reductive and potentially anti-therapeutic. What is important is the investigation of the feelings and behaviors regarding the contract, i.e., what in psychoanalysis is called analysis of transference and countertransference. The contract is only a tool in order to do therapy, because in psychotherapy "the way is the goal".
