This paper describes the criminal legal instruments used in the lower part of Molise - where the Author has been working for several years - to counter crimes related to illegal immigration, exploitation of non-EU citizens or other forms of illegal exploitation of foreign citizens. Moreover, this paper proposes some reflections on the suitability - or, better, on the unsuitability - of the criminal legal system which should pursue a deterrent effect. This analysis is enriched with special reference to practical - and often tragic - examples.
