HafenCity is a big-scale urban project aimed at the regeneration of the abandoned Elbe harbour near the historic city center of Hamburg. In this essay, the author traces all planning and implementation phases of the project, a process in which a strong bond with the water and the area’s industrial past constantly re-emerge. HafenCity is a project orchestrated by the public sector that materializes - through a sustainable urban approach - the desire to (re)create a space with its own identity, capable of generating new places of the city and within the city.
