Differently from the concepts of "illusion", "the ability to tolerate frustration", and "libidinal investment", the concept of faith has not yet found a well-defined place in psychoanalytic theory. Bion dealt with F (faith) in terms of its function in scientific work. According to Bion, an "Act of Faith" is required to give consistency to certain hypotheses and feelings that arise during psychoanalytic sessions and that correspond to facts whose existence is not acknowledged by the most common theories. The author’s aim is to regain Bion’s proposals by highlighting the clinical relevance of F and developing a concept that is to be useful in analytic work. The first part of the text is devoted to the evaluation of the areas in which faith and trust overlap, and, on the other hand, on how they depart from each other. The second part sees F as an element of the analyst’s psychic function which helps him/her to support a patient who feels desperate and hopeless, while waiting for the recovery of the patient’s desire to live. The final part focuses on F from the patient’s point of view and studies the changes that may occur in F during analysis sessions.

Keywords: Faith, trust, libidinal investment, sense of vitality.
