The Trieste Italian-German summit of November 18th 2008 marked a somehow delicate passage in the diplomatic relations between the two countries, not least by reason of both the growing tide of compensation claims on the part of former Italian military internees (IMI) and the renewal of war crime trials relating to the Wermacht conduct in occupied Italy 1943- 1945. Following this notable event, Rome and Berlin decided to nominate a bilateral historical commission. The scholarly organ, operative since 2009, presented its final Report in December 2012. Wolfgang Schieder and Mariano Gabriele, chairmen respectively of the German and the Italian delegation, comment on the experience, research and discussion developed by the Commission. Nicola Labanca looks through the final Report, points out peculiar and indeed positive aspects of this Commission as compared with the wider set of historical committees for reconciliation, and puts forward some suggestions directed to vivify debate.
