To address the irregular transformation of contemporary cities a renewed analytical and comparative effort is required. Starting from this premise, the author emphasizes the importance of widening the debate in the Anglo-Saxon academic mainstream with contributions from the global south. In this context, Mediterranean cities are considered a fertile ground for the exploration not only of the reproduction mechanisms of neoliberal urbanism but also of alternative spatiality and political participation, that are being shaped in protest movements and urban conflicts.
