Ercole Bottani (1897-1978) was an Electrotechnics Professor at Politecnico di Milano. He gave important scientific contributions to his discipline and innovated teaching, launching in Milan an early degree in Electronics. At the end of the second World War many electric power plants were damaged and there were many problems with the electrical supply to private consumers and industry. Bottani was also a governmental commissioner for electricity in Northern Italy between 1945 and 1950; during this period he reorganized the functionality of electrical system in this part of the country. Convinced of the need to avoid the industrial recovery with a big electrical tests laboratory, in 1956 he founded Cesi (Centro elettrotecnico sperimentale italiano), which became very successful in Italy and abroad. In 1955 he was called by the municipality of Milan to found and preside over the company for the Milan underground, resolving almost all financial, administrative and executive problems of the first line.
