The combination of demographic factors, the barriers to entry for the younger generation, and the actions to re-establish the financial balance of the public pension system, have deeply redesigned the age structure of the Italian labour market. The gradual increase in the average age of the workforce, in addition to producing a less dynamic offer, increases the risk of skill obsolescence. This process is likely to be accentuated as a result of the transformations connected with the c.d. Fourth industrial revolution, marked by the pervasive introduction of digital technologies all economic sectors. It is therefore crucial to note how Italian companies intend to cope with these transformations, to understand whether the aging of the workforce has organizational repercussions and what are the possible ways of managing human resources. In this work, we will present the first results of an Inapp case study carried out in the Belluno eyewear district, which explores the relationship between the employability of workers over 50 and technological innovation in the manufacturing sector.
