Enhancing value in health care delivery, thus achieving the best population outcomes, exploiting the value of their human capital, developing smooth relationships between clinicians and managers, are surely among the most relevant challenges health care organisations are constantly facing. In this paper, an initiative recently launched by the Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia (the "Reggio Emilia Value Improvement Programme -RE-VIP") is described. The operational modalities of this initiative are outlined, as well as its rationale, which is based on the assumption that those fundamental issues need to be delt with jointly, through the promotion of an organisational culture entrenched in continuously sustaining innovative changes in the organisation and delivery of health services.
