The paper is the result of an ethnographic research conducted in a public buildings neighborhood, the rione De Gasperi in Ponticelli, eastern Naples, where the practice of squatting a public housing unit has been deeply rooted for decades. The paper investigates in detail a peculiar form of illegal access to public housing, the "informal takeover". The aim is to show how informal housing is the result of mutual influences between the formal sphere and the informal sphere.

Keywords: formal/informal; informal takeover; public housing; Naples; policies.
