The contribution investigates the social PPP impact on the financial and non-financial performance of public hospitals. It sheds new lights on methods of intervention and opportunities that characterize these relationships. We conduct an empirical analysis to identify the influence that the role and the corporate governance characteristics of no-profit organizations can have on partnerships’ success. Our sample is drawn from PPPs existing in 6 Italian regions - chosen based on scores achieved on the Essential Assistance Levels (LEA) - in the year 2019. The paper fills gaps in the existing literature and provides critical insights that support policy-makers and operators in the sector.

Keywords: public-private partnership, hospitals, no-profit, gender, corporate governance, performance.
