This contribution analyses and compares the most important regulations that outlined the recte vivere and the set of values of Italian officers in the Liberal Age (1861-1914). After an examination of the military penal codes issued in 1859 and 1869, it investigates the military disciplinary codes issued in 1859, 1872, and 1907. The article also examines the socioeconomic and educational heterogeneity of the Italian officer corps, the debate on their mission, and their image as it was popularized by pro-military press. It therefore reconstructs the evolution of the officer’s ideal type in successive regulations as well as the most evident similarities and dissimilarities between penal and disciplinary codes. As a result, the ideal Italian officer’s profile is proven to be not only less stable and coherent than scholars have hitherto argued, but also somewhat different from those of officers serving in other armies.
