The expression and the concept of utopia repeatedly appear in Lévinas’ work. They assume at least three different meanings, explicitly synthetized by the Author: a pejorative meaning, sharply criticised by Lévinas, the Christian one of "utopia" as "escape from the world" and "research for a salvation as an anchorite". Perhaps, the most widespread meaning of "utopia" in Lévinas’ work is the one of utopia as "doing Israel", "abnegation towards a world to come", towards "a world to be fulfilled". At last, the etymological meaning of "utopia", the deepest and, consequently, the one founding the previous meanings: "utopia" as "non-place", "open place to be occupied", "defection of every dimension".
