AB -   The article deals with the possibilities and difficulties of orientation inmodern societies. The first part discusses the consequences of a plurality of values and life scripts which are permanently forcing the individual to choose between different orientations. The second part of the article deals with the cognitive uncertainties of collective decision making. In the field of technological risk, for example, the basic difference between naturally and culturally caused facts becomes uncertain.The article pleads for understanding this situation as a liberation from unquestioned cognitive authorities and as a chance of normative learning.
