More recently, the psychological and medical trend towards evidence based intervention models has induced the need to define models and interventions in the area of psychological distress. In this paper, we discuss the main areas of research within serious paediatric illness and present a review of the empirical studies on the effectiveness of psychological interventions published in the last thirty years. This review shows that the effectiveness of psychological interventions in serious paediatric illness is still quite poor: some cognitive-behavior approaches have proved partially effective, while the results of individual psychodynamic therapy are still uncertain. Moreover, most studies suffer from many methodological limits, and the large variability in the way studies are performed and documented makes comparison between them very difficult.
