this paper offers a grammatical account of what it means to be recognized, and argues for the co-construction of recognition and personal identity. People recognize themselves not only within a socially sanctioned categorical scheme, but also by being acknowledged in their distinctiveness. The final part of the paper approaches the normative question how should persons be recognized?. By showing that the identity of a person or is not a given set of features that should be faithfully recognized, and that recognition is an act that has performative and ethical implications, the paper goes on to suggest an alternative picture of the relation between recognition and identity based on the concept of acknowledgement.;
