In August 2012 the Council of Representatives of the American Psychological Association (APA) adopted a Resolution on the recognition of psychotherapy effectiveness. In a series of 28 statements it is affirmed that psychotherapy is effective in various conditions, diagnoses, age groups and populations, and also that it is cost-effective and often superior to medication. Each statement is accompanied by detailed bibliographical references (about 150 citations in the overall) that support the statements that have been made. In the conclusions it is resolved that APA increase its efforts to educate the public about the effectiveness of psychotherapy and support formal recognition of psychotherapy in the health care system, particularly in order to address the needs of underserved populations.
