This paper, originally published in issue no. 3/1982 of the journal Psicoterapia e Scienze Umane (and followed by a second paper in issue no. 4/1982, titled "Men and machines: Psychological problems due to technological development"), Emanuele Gualandri (1929-2017) discusses some of the problems caused by the growing informatization that in those years was beginning to permeate the entire society. Some international documents are analyzed: the Report of the Organi-sation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) of 1971, the Report of the Japan Computer Usage Development Institute (JCUDI) of 1972, the first and the second Reports (of 1972 and 1974, respectively) of the "Club of Rome", the Report of Simon Nora and Alain Minc of 1978 to the French President Giscard d’Estaing, and so on. In particular, the psychological implications of these important developments are discussed.
