The Stronghold of Arquata del Tronto is a multi-layered building, the existence of which is attested since the thirteenth century. Its military function ceased for centuries. Reduced to ruins, starting from the beginning of the twentieth century, it has been the subject of restorations aimed at redefining its image, transforming it into an identity symbol of the people of Arquata. The seismic events of 2016 highlighted the vulnerabilities induced by works not sufficiently aware of the issues of durability and seismic behaviour, often suspended and never completed. The article, after a historical reconstruction of the twentieth century interventions, highlights the vulnerability factors that led to the numerous damages and identifies some aspects on which the restoration project must focus.
