This article provides a historical overview and a theoretical systematization of the "Large Group" setting. It should be intended as a daily session, even in consecutive days, embedded in training seminars with theoretical lessons, plenary sessions, including small and medium group, and it mainly refers to educational contexts such as the Leicester Conferences of the Tavistock Institute, the congresses of the Group Analytic Society’s (GAS) and of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy (IAGP) as well as to the Large Groups organized in psychiatric communities and companies. The most important contributions in the literature are analysed with regard to the set/setting parameters (number of participants and conductors/observers, goals, implementation spheres (environments or contexts), prevailing dynamics, etc) starting from the essential works of Foulkes, Käes, Anzieu, Kreeger, De Maré, until the most recent ones of Weinberg and Weishut. The authors also describe the specific features (in terms of process, staff set up, role of conductors and observers, goals) of the Large Analytic Group, that consists of an educational-experiential workshop exclusively composed of consecutive Large Group Session, as it has been introduced in Italy in the 90’s by Alice Ricciardi von Platen and further developed thanks to the work of Leonardo Ancona.
