The essay examines the contribution which Niklas Luhmann's theory offers in regard to the analysis of the social exclusion processes characterising present modern societies. The theory provides some general theoretical notions which favour an appropriate understanding of social exclusion, as its distinction between "internal" and "external" and its pointing out of the multidimensionality of social processes as an expression of the functional differentiation of modern societies. It also offers a precise definition of those factors which cause the widening of social exclusion within modern society. But it is this same emphasis on differentiation processes which makes it impossible under Luhmannian systems theory to formulate all-embracing principles of social inclusion of persons which would be the only way to tackle this basic problem of social integration. The "societal approach" is presented as an alternative and more promising theoretical proposal for the analysis of social exclusion and for operative strategies against it.;
