Durkheim and Goffman theories’ concerning ritual practice shows a displacement of the sacred from the exceptional collective ritual to the ordinary world of everyday interaction. In this movement, what is lost is the role of the alteration of consciousness: for Durkheim the state of trance is the basis for the social tie, while for Goffman modernity proposes an organization of society in which individuals are asked for an opposite state of consciousness. Trust, in modern societies, is reserved to people capable of a good demeanour, that is to whom are able to close every ways of perception and penetration that others could use to reach him/her. Changing in MDMA consumptions sets and settings describe a similar movement. Ecstasy is no more confined in the exceptionalities of the great collective rituals (underground raves parties) but for the presentation of the self in the modern world of the loisir
