Catanzaro, damaged by aerial bombardment in August and September 1943, was included in the list of neighbourhoods required to produce a Reconstruction Plan. Here, as elsewhere, prevailed the long-past approach of restoring the sanitation and social infrastructure of the historic center through demolition, reconstruction, outward retreat in order to make room for public administration office blocks or for piazzas in the thinned out old town. It was a chance to complete the process of rationalization already underway without straying from the original aim, and without cultural debate as to the way forward. Modernization of the old quarters was implemented piecemeal and in disarticulated fashion, so much so that the city developed haphazardly and the historic center gradually lost its appeal.
