In the Editorial Gustavo Zagrebelsky discusses the relationship between the State and the Catholic church in the so-called age of post-imperialism, in which the crisis of rationalizing subjectivity is accompanied by a return to religion that asserts its role as a unifying social force in the face of the relativism of the contemporary world. Such a change is seen as a response to the inbuilt difficulties of the liberal State, that places individual liberty at the centre, but does not guarantee adequate resources for society. The conflict between Church and State today are not just over specific questions, but relate to a general view of public life and the basic principles of democratic liberties; they express opposing values that are often irreconcilable. Starting from a historical contextualization of the gospel passage «Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is of God»;
