Wittgenstein and Spengler: the Physiognomical Turn - The paper explores Spengler’s influence upon Wittgenstein by comparing their respective views on the following six points. 1. There is a form of knowledge, Menschenkenntnis, that cannot be expressed in propositions; 2. Language involves more than mere communication. Expression is a more primitive function; 3. The morphological method: philosophy is a matter of describing physiognomies; 4. Mathematics is not a matter of one but of several heterogeneous techniques for solving problems; 5. The basis of aesthetics is our aesthetic reactions to things; 6. Culture degenerates into civilization.
