Lifelong learning is the answer that educational policies have been able to build at the end of the last century to face up the processes of globalization and of migration. The hardness and the complexity of social processes induced by the change of the production in the global world is calling for an effort of knowledge, and of an unknown commitment of resources to resist against the processes of social disintegration and to support individuals "at risk" in the world of flexible working. Educational systems are called upon to invent new pathways that will help people to look far and to design themselves beyond the jobs "just in time" that in the job market, today, are, almost, the unique opportunity for social integration. Learning systems must gradually abandon the illusory value of interdisciplinary courses, emphasizing instead the relevance of cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills and making explicit the goals of each phase of the learning process in order to make it meaningful and valuable to the learner.
