After recalling the main stages in the process of consolidation of tourism as a sector of supranational interest, the article shows the basic innovations that follow from the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Particular attention is paid to the new competences and instruments of the EU institutions. In this perspective, the Authors consider the implications stemming from the express recognition in the Reform Treaty of a EU tourism policy and illustrate its possible future developments in the light of the practice of the EU institutions.
