This paper analyzes Jakob von Uexküll’s essay, first from an historical perspective taking into account the introduction to each of the three Italian editions; then from a theoretical perspective, showing how some of the physiologist’s theories, including the notion of Umwelt, should be integrated into today’s reflections on ecology, with an emphasis on the concepts of "Ecological Hierarchy" and "Niche construction". However, to become a topical theoretical tool, Uexküll’s theories call for contextualization in an evolutionary and Darwinian conceptual framework.
Keywords: Animal behavior, Comparative Psychology, Ecological Hierarchy, Ecological Theory, Niche construction, Umwelt
