The essay aims to examine the requests of autonomy appeared in the southern regions of modern Iraq, revealing a continuity that, even with pauses and breaks, can be traced back to the beginning of the XX century. The research begins with a description of the historical context which framed the actions of Sayyid Talib al-Naqib, leader of the autonomist movement emerged in Basra years before World War I, and it continues with an analysis of the fate of a series of autonomy, federal and confederal plans submitted to Ottoman and British authorities till the end of the Twenties. Subsequently, the article examines the debate related to the institutional and administrative structure of the post-2003 Iraq. Its final part is dedicated to the description of several southern autonomy projects centered in Basra which, notwithstanding Baghdad’s opposition, keep on exerting their influence on the southern city and the surrounding areas.
