The aim of this paper is to review Luca’s clinical case from the Interpersonal Motivational Systems perspective. Following this point of view, Luca’s clinical case highlights the importance of the therapeutic relationship with patients who come from a history of traumatic development experiences and the difficulties of this patients to maintain a "proper distance" between self and others. The construction of a collaborative alliance with the therapist allowed Luca to explore his traumatic memories connected with attachment, without being overwhelmed by emotions, and keeping arousal within his "window of tolerance". The establishment of a relationship based on the collaborative motivational system is the main factor to promote affect regulation and adaptive behavior..
