Il futuro delle aree marginali periurbane, ambiti ‘incerti’ e di transizione, non del tutto agricoli in senso pienamente produttivo e non ancora urbani, è un tema di grande sensitività per le regioni metropolitane mature e in particolare per quelle europee. In Europa lo spazio periurbano corrisponde quantitativamente più o meno a quello delle aree urbane dense. Oggi queste aree sono riconosciute per il loro proprio carattere e per il potenziale di multifunzionalità. Importanti esperienze sono in corso in Europa in Usa e in Lombardia. Il presente paper, che apre i contributi dei partecipanti allo workshop internazionale tenutosi al Politecnico di Milano nel giugno 2013 «Periurban areas as a main issue of the mature metro-regions», esplora alcune esperienze sviluppate nell’UE e in Lombardia, mettendo in evidenza le peculiarità dello spazio e del paesaggio periurbani della regione metropolitana di Milano
