What has been the role of migrations in the history of Lombardy? In the twentieth century, the Lombard area was mainly depicted as a land of immigration and opportunity, because of its industrial growth and economic vitality, while the long record of ancient migrations was largely ignored or left to local historians. a careful study of early modern Lombard society, however, shows a constant flow of emigration and immigration movements across its territory. This two way mobility has played an important role in the creation of the region’s manufacturing economy and the rise of its wealth. The research conducted on such objects as charity institutions, churches, civil buildings and funerary monuments shows how pervasive and significant is the memory of past migration in the region, and how these sources can be exploited in order to achieve a better knowledge of its migratory past. it also demonstrates how the prevalent myths of success in business linked to the regional identity, have helped to shape the memory of this long record of migrations.
