The work is organized around the theme of sustainable urban development, providing an analytical framework that integrates the social practices approach in relation to space and spatiality. Social practices are read as individual or collective processes of appropriation and transformation of space by individuals or groups that a) act as an alternative to local governments and b) as a direct or indirect reaction to public urban governance. In support of this reading two examples are provided.
