La dipendenza dalla storia delle dinamiche del vivente, presenti e future, è un’intuizione comune alla biologia e alle scienze umane. Questo articolo propone una analisi preliminare, ma rigorosa della path dependence in termini di invarianti e trasformazioni che preservano l’invarianza, presente anche in fisica. L’idea è che le tracce (relativamente) invarianti delle trasformazioni eco-sistemiche passate contribuiscono alla "determinazione" della situazione presente e futura conducendo, mediante una peculiare forma di impredicibilità (o aleatorietà) in biologia, al centro della creazione di novità. Questo vale a fortiori per le dinamiche umane cognitive e storiche;
