Questo lavoro presenta una nuova metodologia per ricostruire la spesa energetica delle imprese manifatturiere italiane con 20 addetti e oltre per il periodo 2003-2011. Utilizzando una pluralità di fonti informative per imputare i consumi fisici di energia - per settore e fonte - nell’archivio di microdati Invind, la spesa di ciascuna impresa è ottenuta valorizzando gli usi energetici con i prezzi prevalenti sui mercati delle diverse fonti. Secondo le nostre stime le imprese nel 2011 spendevano mediamente poco meno di 740 mila euro per l’acquisto di energia, il 61 per cento più del 2003. I costi sono più elevati per le imprese localizzate al Nord, di maggiori dimensioni e che operano nei settori della produzione di materiale da costruzione e ceramiche e in quelli della chimica e petrolchimica. Nel periodo 2003-2011 l’incidenza dei costi energetici è aumentata dal 2,3 al 2,6 per cento in rapporto al fatturato e dal 27,1 al 30,8 rispetto al costo del lavoro. Correlando l’incidenza della spesa energetica con indicatori di performance emerge che le imprese con più elevati costi energetici hanno una minor crescita del fatturato e una minore propensione all’export.;
