The question concerning the necessity of comparative law is an important issue still today. There are several international, regional and national organisations, associations, research institutes and universities dealing with comparative law. This article will especially address the importance of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for comparative law. Important factors for a better understanding of the significance of the CJEU for the field of comparative law are the composition and working methods of the CJEU, the comparative law analysis in judgments and opinions of the Advocates General, the constitutional traditions common to the Member States as well as the linguistic comparative method used by the CJEU
