The article seeks to describe the procedures and goals of epistemologically oriented historiography. It examines some of the modes of transmission of theories and some cases of theoretical syncretism (§ 1), discusses the ambiguity of certain historiographical categories (§ 2) and a case of false alternative between theories (§ 3), ending with some general considerations on the use of history.
