This contribution for the 40 years of the journal Urban and Rural Sociology founded by Paolo Guidicini, represents an opportunity for a balance of the editorial experience as well as a reflection on the future of the discipline in its thematic articulations and specializations. The Author highlights the need for a disciplinary redefinition in the frame of a new critical urban theory.
