The main aim of the article is to emphasize the peculiarity and importance of urban sociology, both in the more comprehensive framework of sociology and in the other so-called non-sociological disciplines dealing with spaces and territories. It also points out the paths of future development of the discipline - both as regards the themes and the methodologies - proposing, in particular, the creation of a Sociological Encyclopedia of Places as a further reflection tool for studying the relationships between environment (natural and built) and society.
