A training experience for the staff of an REMS (a Residence for the Execution of Security Measures) offers the opportunity to reflect on the conditions that make non-violent psychiatry possible even in a semi-open prison context. The author believes that an REMS is an acceptable solution in order to replace judicial psychiatric hospitals, the absolute evil. REMS workers should be helped to minimize feelings of anxiety and fear caused by their involvement in caregiving activities.
