Dissociazione in psicopatologia è un termine che indica sia la categoria diagnostica dei disturbi dissociativi, sia i sintomi dissociativi della coscienza, sia alcuni processi psicopatogenetici causati da esperienze traumatiche che interferiscono con l’integrazione delle funzioni psichiche. I processi patogenetici dissociativi generano sintomi dissociativi che a loro volta possono dominare alcuni quadri clinici come i disturbi dissociativi, oppure possono presentarsi, in misura variabile, in pressoché tutte le categorie diagnostiche del DSM-IV rappresentando un indice di gravità del quadro clinico. Tale diffusione, unita alle numerose osservazioni cliniche e alle crescenti conferme sperimentali, suggeriscono l’esistenza di una dimensione psicopatologica, legata alle esperienze traumatiche dello sviluppo, che compromette, con le manifestazioni dissociative, la prognosi di molti disturbi nei quali diffonde, e che richiede specifiche competenze per un trattamento appropriato.
