This essay analyses a volume by Antoine Lilti on the invention of celebrity between 1750 and 1850 in terms of its original entry into the founding mechanisms of modernity. Particular emphasis is paid to its relationship with the expanding world of entertainment (one of the key ‘laboratories’ of contemporary celebrity), as well as to the specific iter that, from the very beginning, has linked together genre and celebrity
